Shrewd Poodle

A modern day fable/song about a poodle who knew how to get everything he wanted until...he got more than he bargained for! Listen here: Shrewd Poodle

I knew a young poodle, who ate apple strudel
And spinach egg noodles in garlic and oil.
A dog food suggestion was out of the question!
He’d feign indigestion and leave it to spoil.

Real shrewd, that poodle!
He’d trained all those humans so perfectly well.
Real shrewd, that poodle!
He had the whole neighborhood under his spell!

He loved veggie stew (a vegetarian, too!)
In a thick gravy goo, mashed with carrots and beans.
He’d sit there and drool while his dinner got cool,
Then chow down like a fool till he licked his plate clean!

Real shrewd, that poodle!
He knew how to get anything that he pleased.
Real shrewd that poodle!
He sampled the finest from Thai to Chinese!

Chocolate fondue topped with cherries, cashews
And a ripe honeydew with whipped cream on the side.
He grew and he grew he could no longer move
And he turned bright blue on the ambulance ride!

Real shrewd, that poodle!
He got to the hospital barely alive!
Real shrewd, that poodle!
Some say it’s a miracle that he survived!

So now our shrewd poodle can’t look at a strudel,
Or even a noodle of non-doggie stew.
He sticks to his diet -- he’s learning to like it.
His stomach so quietly whispers, Thank you!”

Real shrewd, that poodle!
He learned a hard lesson we humans should heed!
Real shrewd, that poodle!
The things that we want might not be what we need!
