Seven New Children in our Family!
Great news! We are now the proud parents of seven nieces and nephews, who came to us from North Carolina. They are: Jonas, 3; Josiah, 7; Anya, 9; Eliah, 11; John Aaron, 14; Moriah, 16; and Joshua, 17. We have been turning our house upside down to make room for them. We even had the garage converted into a bedroom.

The Homophone Song
This pun-ny song about homophones -- those pesky pairs of words that sound alike but are spelled differently and mean something entirely different from each other -- was written by 15 people! I was down in Arkansas a short while ago, giving a workshop to music teachers at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AK (what a great name!). In the morning, we explored Music through the Curriculum, and in the afternoon, I hosted a Songwriting Workshop. The synapses were firing and we had a lot of laughs! I am still sorting out the copyright info, so only my name is on the credits, but soon everyone who contributed to the song will be on it. Check it out here: homophones
It's amazing what you can come up with in the right atmosphere. Many of these folks had never written a song before. What a blast!

Meet Marla!
For Marla Lewis, music is a way of life. She began singing as soon as she learned to talk! At the age of 3, she sang on a national radio talent show called, “Live Like a Millionaire”. She started piano lessons at the age of 5 and guitar a few years later. As a child, Marla loved to sing songs in many languages from around the world. Her mother, also a singer, introduced her to jazz, Dixieland, and opera. Marla also fell in love with folk and pop music. She wrote her first song at the age of 12, entitled, “Hopeless Love.” It still makes her friends chuckle. Today, when kids hear Marla's songs, they say: "Can we hear that AGAIN??"

I had no idea when I started The International Breast Milk Project just 3 years ago that so many other moms would also want to help in this special way. I have been equally amazed at the outpouring of support from dads, grandparents and friends – those of you without freezers full of milk - like Marla Lewis, who has written award-winning children’s songs about our program, or Peggy Ehrensperger, a health teacher from Long Island, who raised thousands of dollars by collecting change in bottles, or my dad, Bill Harlan, who talks me through challenging times by constantly quoting lines from the movie Airplane: “Just want to let you know, we’re all counting on you.”

-- Jill Harlan Youse, Founder and Executive Director, International Breast Milk Project
